According to the US Census, Latinos, native and immigrant represents the fastest growing workforce in the hospitality industry. In fact, this population represents 19% of the documented US hospitality workforce and 12% (34.8 million) of the total US population in 2000. This demographic change represents challenges due to the inherent language barrier and demonstrates the critical need to facilitate communication between English and Spanish speakers involved with the hospitality industries. To this end, culinary, hospitality and restaurant management programs have incorporated courses such as Culinary Languages, Spanish in the Workplace and Spanish in the Foodservice Industry.
