This book takes a systems-thinking approach to allow readers to understand how Workplace safety and health (WSH) is an integral part of any organisation. The different chapters are strung together by an overarching model of incident causation, and underpinning models are presented to allow a strong conceptual foundation. Practical WSH knowledge also discussed in relevant chapters to ensure that beginners have an introduction to the fundamentals of WSH hazards and controls.The second edition presents additional systems thinking concepts and archetypes not covered previously, the safe design process in Australia, thoughts on learning disabilities and safety culture, and additional case studies. Besides the strong emphasis on conceptual framework, readers will also be exposed to the details of a WSH management system and practical WSH processes, hazards and controls. A series of online quizzes are available to readers to help them to reinforce the concepts of each chapter.Undergraduates and post-graduates will benefit from the systematic introduction to the foundations of WSH management. Goh Yang-Miang is an Associate Professor and Director at the Centre for Project and Facilities Management, Department of Building, School of Design and Environment, National University of Singapore (NUS). He holds both a B.Eng. and PhD in Civil Engineering from NUS. Prior to his current appointment, Dr Goh was Deputy Head (Research) (2016–2019) and Deputy Programme Director (B.Sc. Project and Facilities Management) (2013–2016), Department of Building, NUS; Assistant Professor at the Department of Building, NUS (2012–2016); Senior Consultant at Det Norske Veritas, Singapore (2011–2012); Senior Lecturer at the School of Public Health, Curtin University, Western Australia (2007–2010); Engineer, Group Leader, Head, and Assistant Director (Investigations) at the Occupational Safety and Health Division at the Ministry of Manpower, Singapore (2005–2007); and Research Engineer/Research Assistant at NUS (2003–2004).Prof Goh is also a Member of the External Review Panel on SAF Safety (ERPSS) (2017–present); Member of the Workplace Safety and Health Council Construction and Landscape Committee (2015–2017); Chairman/Co-Chairman of the Health and Safety Engineering Technical Committee, Institution of Engineers (IES), Singapore (2015–2018); and Academic Panel Member, IES Academy (2016–present). His current research interests are: Workplace safety and health; Systems thinking; Fall protection; Analytics, machine learning and knowledge-based systems; and management of complex projects.
