What is innovation and what does it take to make it work?     About the AuthorDr Thomas Menkhoff is Professor of Organisational Behaviour & Human Resources (Education) at the Lee Kong Chian School of Business, Singapore Management University (SMU), which he joined in 2001.Between 2013 and 2018, he served as Academic Director of SMU's Master of Science in Innovation Programme.An award-winning educator, Dr. Menkhoff has published numerous articles in scholarly journals and several books on the socio-cultural dimensions of managing knowledge transfer, innovation, and change in multi-cultural contexts and Asian entrepreneurship.Three of his recent publications are as follows: (i) Thomas Menkhoff, Chay Yue Wah, Hans-Dieter Evers, and Hoon Chang Yau (eds.) 2014, Catalyst for Change — Chinese Business in Asia, New Jersey: World Scientific Publishing; (ii) Thomas Menkhoff, Kan Siew Ning, Hans-Dieter Evers, and Chay Yue Wah (eds.) 2018, Living in Smart Cities: Innovation and Sustainability, New Jersey: World Scientific Publishing; and (iii) Chay Yue Wah, Thomas Menkhoff, and Linda Low (eds.) 2020, China's Belt and Road Initiative — Understanding the Dynamics of a Global Transformation, New Jersey: World Scientific Publishing.His current research interests centre on sustainable innovation at ('smart') city and corporate levels; technology-enhanced learning; and Industry 4.0 adoption by Asian SMEs.Dr. Menkhoff has served (among others) as consultant to the German Agency of Technical Cooperation (GTZ/GIZ), the Government of Singapore, the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), Design Singapore Council, Mahidol University (Bangkok/Thailand), the Commonwealth Secretariat, Arthur D. Little, Asian Productivity Organization (APO), the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Government of Malaysia, and various small and big private sector firms.He has formerly taught at the National University of Singapore (NUS), the University of Cologne, and the University of Bielefeld in Germany. In 2009, Dr. Menkhoff was the recipient of SMU's university-wide 'Most Innovative Teacher Award'. In 2017, he was awarded the SMU Faculty/Staff Contribution to Student Life Award (Individual).About the ContributorsChay Yue Wah is an Associate Professor, School of Human Development and Social Services, Singapore University of Social Sciences. He has held various faculty and administrative appointments at the National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore Management University (SMU), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and SIM University (UniSIM). A psychologist by training, Dr Chay has published in the areas of entrepreneurship, work commitment, citizenship behaviour and expatriation. His current research interests are focused on smart cities, knowledge systems, innovation and maritime ports. Email: .Sarah Woon is a second-year SMU Information Systems student majoring in Cybersecurity and a recipient of SMU's Global Impact Scholarship Award.
